The most graphically violent and disgusting film I've ever seen. A tree is seen raping a woman, three of the main characters either turn into zombies which eat themselves, get shot, hacked to pieces and explode into red and green blood and pus. Some of the most realistic blood/gore/special effects I've ever seen in a horror movie; which is amazing considering it was released in 1981 with a relatively small budget. And it's its violence that is partly what makes it such an excellent film. The producers are clearly very skilled - they know more than anything what is truly terrifying and what isn't, and stick strictly to what is terrifying. They know more than anything what will truly scare and shock the audience, and they take advantage of this at every oppurtunity they get, and as evidently and frequently as they can (although unlike most horror movies, this film starts off very slow and gradually (and suddenly) chimes in with the violence). The most terrifying of things these guys can possibly think up are executed in such an over-the-top manner that it really is hard not to like it. If only it spent a little less time repeating itself in parts (honestly, I'm not complaining, it's a brilliant film), otherwise it just might have a go at being the greatest horror movie ever. A/ A+
