This is possibly my favourite cartoon of all time. I love it's humour, and it's suggestive innuendos and double entendres.
After the firing of John Kricfalusi, the show automatically lost all visual details and qualities; the things that made this show so unique in the first place.
This show's grotesque, visual humour is easily the best around. Some things are just so unimaginably disgusting that I can't watch. Like Stimpy licking all the hair of an oversized, disgusting, prisoner.
It's become so famous, as to receive parodies and homages:
In The Simpsons episode, "Brother From the Same Planet", Bart and his new dad are watching a R&S episode; maintaining it's unique visual style.
In the animated show, Drawn Together, they have parodied Stimpy, and also frequently make homages to the Ren and Stimpy show's beautifully skilled, unique, artistic "close-ups".
I almost love this show as much as I love The Simpsons. That's how much I admire, and respect it. But of course, I will never like anything as much as I love The Simpsons.
This show was surprisingly clever for it's time. In some ways, it does seem ahead of it's time. The animation is easily my favourite of any show, ever. It's so detailed, and expressive.
But, this show still manages to shock me. It changes between extremely violent, gross, gruesome, vile, revolting, disturbing, and even genuinely scary. I actually laugh at some of the things that managed to get past Nickelodeon.
If The Simpsons is the greatest, this is easily my next favourite, and it always will be.
R.I.P.
