Now I know most of you probably aren't fans of this genre, and some of you might even hate it. That's very understandable. I've included some albums here that I feel are the very best of the genre, and if you are ever going to give this genre a try, I suggest you start with these records.
Cradle of Filth - Thornography (2006, Roadrunner Records)
Cradle of Filth have always been my favourite band in the entire world. Seriously, they're amazing for a metal band. Even their 1994 debut was above average. Their latest album, "Thornography" is easily their best work yet. It is just a metallic masterpiece. It would seem literally impossible to follow up 2004's, "Nymphetamine" which was also a masterpiece, but this one managed to be even better.
It is for a variety of reasons:
- Dani Filth actually sings in this album
- It's even more melodic and catchy
- There is simply not one bad song at all
I rarely do this, but I'll give this amazing album a 10/10. If you are ever going to buy or listen to a modern metal album, seriously, check this out.
Recommended Tracks: Any!
Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine (2003, Century Media Records)
Holy, freaking, crap. This is just an amazing metal record. All the songs are just so melodic and catchy - this is easily their best release yet. If you're a fan of old-school metal, and don't like modern metal, then check this out - it's technical, melodic, old-school metal that's been repeatedly spit-polished and modernised.
The only negative things are that some songs feel repetetive and there's some de-ja-vu-ing going on at times, but there's usually an amazing riff to follow it.
9.7/10.
Recommended Tracks: "Nemesis"
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness (2002, Nuclear Blast Records)
Now you might think Black Metal, or at least the concept of Black Metal is a joke (even I'm not particularly fond of it); with the exception of Dimmu Borgir's albums, this is easily the best Black Metal album ever released. Not only are the tracks easily acessable, they manage to make this kind of music enjoyable and even catchy - which is originally Dimmu Borgir's trademark.
9/10.
Recommended Tracks: "One By One", "Within the Dark Mind"
Slipknot - Vol. 3- The Subliminal Verses (2004, Roadrunner Records)
This album not only sums up what Slipknot are, and have always been about, but it adds to it more than any one of their previous albums have. It's a really fun record, with lots of catchy riffs; it's a very melodic album, and easily their most accessible one to date.
Recommended Tracks: "Duality", "Vermillion", "Before I Forget", "The Nameless"
