Has anyone here ever played these fantastic games?
These award winning games were created by "Oddworld Inhabitants" (Munch's Oddysee, Stranger's Wrath) in 1997 and 1998.
Story:
"The game centers on the titular Abe, a Mudokon slave working at the RuptureFarms meat processing factory on Oddworld. When he discovers that he and his friends face death at the hands of their desperate master, he decides to escape and aid as many enslaved Mudokons as he can along the way. The player assumes the role of Abe, and must escape from the factory before embarking on a perilous quest to restore his once noble people."
Basically, Mudokens are creatures, usually blue or green. In order to complete the game, you must free/save all of them.
Graphics:
One thing that always amazed me with this game, was the graphics.
Easily the most detailed, pleasing to the eye graphics I've ever witnessed on the PS1 console.
And I'm not just talking about the dazzling cut-scenes, but the actual gameplay graphics. Absolutely superb.
Gamespeak:
Holding either L1 or R1 and pressing one of the four main buttons on the right, allows Abe (or any other character) to speak:
Hi, All'o'ya! Wait, Work! Stop it!
Gameplay:
The gameplay is just brilliant. Utterly brilliant.
It's always been so fun. But the unique thing about this game, is that it requires a lot of skill and logic. You need to be clever, you need to make the right moves, and you need to notice things. If you don't, it could ruin the game for you.
As well as GameSpeak, you can possess creatures (Sligs, Scrabs, Paramites, Glukkons).
You can slap them silly (literally), you can fart near them (and their usual response is 'poof!'), and you can pat them on the shoulder and say "Sorry".
You can also walk, run, jump, sneak whenever it's appropriate.
Sometimes Mudokens get suicidal and start saying "No.. " and start hitting themselves to death. That's when you say sorry.
Sometimes they get angry, and the last thing you want to do is slap them..
Abe's Oddysee (1997)
"Abe's Oddysee was widely acclaimed for having innovative gameplay, good graphics and engaging cut-scenes; however, its steep learning curve and system of saving only at checkpoints received criticism."
Abe's Exoddus (1998)
"The game was released to similar critical acclaim as the first title, with similar, albeit slightly enhanced gameplay."
Because of the introduction of the "QuikSave" I think I like this game more. Plus, it has two discs instead of one, so that's a bonus.
